glossary
ESD – abbreviation for electrostatic discharge. Electrostatic
discharge is the rapid, spontaneous transfer of electrostatic charge
induced by a high electrostatic field. Usually the charge flows
through a spark (static discharge) between two bodies at different
electrostatic potentials as they approach one another.
Ions – An atom that carries a positive or negative electric
charge.
Micron – A unit of length. 1 micron = 1 µm = 10-6 meters
= 0.000001 meters = one millionth of a meter. A typical human hair
is about 100 microns. A sheet of tissue paper is about 25 microns
thick.
panchromatic – Sensitive to a wide range of wavelengths of
light. In photography they say panchromatic is sensitive to "all
colors" though they mean the limited spectrum we see
Photoresist – A material which becomes soluble when exposed
to ultraviolet light. Using photoresist prevents etching or plating
of the area it covers (this is also known as resist). Note : There's
another kind that becomes insoluble.
Isotropic – 1. Pertaining to a material with properties, such
as density, electrical conductivity, electric permittivity, magnetic
permeability, or refractive index that do not vary with distance
or direction. 2. Pertaining to a material with magnetic, electrical,
or electromagnetic properties that do not vary with the direction
of static or propagating magnetic, electrical, or electromagnetic
fields within the material.
