Electromagntic Spectrum

Gamma Rays :: The source of these rays is radioactive material, some of
which is man-made and some is natural. The universe is the largest generator
of gamma rays and produces them in a variety of ways.
X-Rays :: Doctors use these wavelengths to look at your bones. X-rays can see through a lot of things, but
not those that are very dense. The universe emits X-rays.
Ultraviolet :: The sun is the main source of UV rays. These are the rays that cause the skin to burn. Stars
and other "hot" objects emit UV radiation. Earth's atmosphere blocks most of the UV from reaching the surface.
Visible :: This is the small range of wavewlengths in the spectrum that our eyes can see. The colors in the visible
spectrum are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red.
Infared :: Almost no infared wavelengths reach the earth's surface, though high altitude aircraft and telescopes on
high mountain tops can absorb some portions. We often think of infared as heat, because it makes our skin feel warm.
Microwave :: These are not only used to cook foods quickly, they are also used to
study the universe and communicate with satellites.
Radio :: These wavelengths are used in transmitting radio and TV signals. Stars and gases in space also emit these
wavelengths. These waves are used to determine the nature of the entities that emit them.
